FRIENDS RECEIVE GRANT
From National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Sep, 1, 2004
The Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge recently received word that they have been awarded $30,000.00 by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. These funds will be used to prepare the Refuge for use by the public. They will cover the cost of planting native trees and shrubs along the trails to be used by visitors to the refuge and of building several facilities for the convenience of refuge visitors: a ridge top viewing platform overlooking one of the large ponds and a photography blind. Both facilities will allow Refuge visitors to view waterfowl close-up and photograph them without disturbing them. These projects are part of a larger effort to prepare the Refuge for public use by mid-2005. Construction of safe public access from 99W on to the Refuge is scheduled to start this summer. Volunteers have already planted several hundred native trees and shrubs along the paths laid out to provide visitors a wonderful view of wildlife while screening the wildlife's view of the visitors. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization established by Congress in 1984 and dedicated to the conservation offish, wildlife and plants, and the habitat on which they depend. The Foundation creates partnerships between the public and private sectors to strategically invest in conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. These funds are the result of the Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife, a nonprofit, voluntary organization whose goals are consistent with those of the Foundation, forming a partnership with the Foundation. Friends membership is open to anyone interested in wildlife habitat restoration and protection. Please visit our website at www.friendsoftherefuge.org for more information on the organization. |
