Volunteer - Long Term Projects

Refuge Biological Program
As monitoring programs grow and become more sophisticated on the Refuge, volunteers are being sought to collect needed biological information. Most surveys are conducted by small groups or individuals and respect the need for flexibility in individual schedules. Some of the types of surveys conducted include:
    Shorebird Surveys
    Marsh Bird Call Back Surveys
    Winter Waterfowl Surveys
    Point Count Surveys
    Mist Net Surveys
    Vegetation Surveys
    Herbarium Collection
    Data Entry
    Special Projects
Click here for an in-depth description of each of these types of surveys and to get a sense of what skills may be necessary. You can also email the Refuge Biologist, Peter Schmidt directly.

Tree Nurturing and Maintenance
We have a lot of maintenance activities on the young trees to do and the once a month Saturday work days won't be enough. We are looking for people to do weeding, mulching, watering with hoses, and mowing with the walk-behind brush mower. Most of this does not require a high level of physical fitness and most of the work is child-friendly also. Work times are flexible at can be done at most times. We just need to schedule the work so the refuge staff knows you are coming and can make arrangements for access to the refuge and for having materials and equipment available. Please contact our Restoration Committee to take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to the refuge.
