Joyfully Connecting Our Community with the Wonder of the Refuge

Member Only Event: Oregon Coast Refuge Wilderness Tour

  • June 14, 2014
  • 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • 19255 SW Pacific Hwy, Sherwood, OR 97140

This is a special Friends Members-only event. Space is limited to 15 members. Contact the Friends office at 503-625-5944x227 or info@friendsoftualatinrefuge.org to register.

Spend five hours touring the wildlife-rich rocky shores of the north coast of Oregon with Project Leader Roy Lowe and Visitor Services Manager Dawn Harris of the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex. In order to meet the tides, the tour will begin at 9:00am* in Canon Beach to see the incredible Haystack Rock and all of its specialties. Nesting here are tufted puffins, pelagic cormorants, pigeon guillemots and western gulls. You will learn about Finley and Bohlman's efforts to protect the wildlife heritage of Three Arch Rocks and discover where Lewis and Clark ventured to observe a whale carcass on the beach. We will then travel to other localities to observe the bird specialties that are part of the coastal refuge system, ending at Cape Meares at 2:30pm. Lunch will be had along the way before our return home. We recommend dressing for potentially inclement weather and for sandy walking on the beach. Bring water, snacks, binoculars and spotting scopes.

*To reach Canon Beach by 9am, the group will work out carpooling details once the participant roster is full, which will probably involve leaving the Refuge around 7:00am.
